Keith Davies

Associate Consultant, Verifier, Research/reference

Keith has extensive experience of working with trauma as a residential social worker with homeless young people in contact with the Criminal Justice System and as a Probation Officer. As a University Lecturer and Tutor working for twenty years with Social Workers and Probation Officers he is committed to supporting learners and to creating spaces in which they feel safe and valued.

Keith began as a teacher of English at a boys comprehensive school. He subsequently worked for four years in residential settings for homeless people and young people in contact with the criminal justice system where, regularly undertaking night shifts, he experienced the impact of trauma on human lives. Leaving to train in social work Keith then practiced as a Probation Officer in London for thirteen years again encountering the long-term ramifications of both early and more recent trauma.

With a foundation in education he supervised a growing number of students on practice placement before joining the Criminal Justice Team at the University of Hertfordshire as a lecturer. During this period Keith attended The Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education gaining a certificate qualification.

He volunteered briefly as a Bereavement Counsellor and, despite finding his home in teaching, has always retained an interest in and a respect for therapeutic work. Keith enjoyed nine years at The University of Hertfordshire deepening his sense of how learners can be supported before becoming the Course Lead for the Undergraduate Social Work Programme at Kingston University. He especially enjoyed the privilege of teaching and led classes in working with diversity, working within organisations and practicing in the criminal justice sector.

Retiring as Associate Professor three years ago Keith is now a volunteer with the RSPB and has completed an MA in Nature and Travel Writing. He also volunteers with Koestler Arts, a small organisation supporting a wide range of vivid art work made by people in prisons and secure mental health settings. Keith retains a concern for practitioners working with trauma and endeavours to create learning environments in which they feel safe and valued.
